READ THIS before commenting
Whether you are a fellow atheist, an unsure agnostic, or a deist/theist, I would like to welcome you and your comments here.
If you’re a deist/theist, you may see a lot of stuff here you don’t like or disagree with. Perhaps you’ll see things that go directly against what you’ve been taught over the years. You might even get hot under the collar.
But you are welcome here, honestly.
My ONLY request for all people who wish to comment is that you abide by these guidelines in your comments, should you leave them. They are:
- Citing your sources: generally, citing other websites is acceptable. If you’d rather cite dead-tree-edition (book) text, that’s ok too — just provide your page numbers and author/title. (ISBN also, if you like). Citing the Bible as evidence or proof is not acceptable! All references to the bible as evidence or proof will be moderated to be quotes of Dr. Seuss books, (I’m being totally serious here.) because, as an atheist friend of mine said once: quoting the bible in an ontological argument is as verifiable as quoting children’s books. Referencing passages in the Bible is acceptable, just not in the establishment of a logical premise.
- Avoiding Logical Fallacies: I have a list of many of them available on this site. Specifically, be sure to not use “Begging the question”, “Post Hoc ergo Propter Hoc”, and the “False Dichotomy” fallacies. (Those three are rampant in theist arguments). All logical fallacies will be noted as such. I won’t edit or remove your comment, only place a parenthetical note (like this) after your statement.
- Avoiding Hate Speech: Technically, this falls under the “Ad Hominem” logical fallacy, but I wanted to underscore this point. Statements that serves no purpose other than to denigrate or insult any group or collective will not be tolerated (this goes for atheists as well!). Light sarcasm is acceptable, when appropriate (i.e. “Spreading lies? Are you calling me an evolutionist?” is OK; “Evolutionists are a bunch of lying America-hating sonsabitches” is not OK.) The acid-test here is both relevancy and focus. Is your comment relevant to the point you are making, and is it the focal point of your statement (i.e. are you commenting just to spout off your pejorative statement, because that’s a no-no).
If you have well-thought-out criticisms, arguments, and counter-points, PLEASE comment them. Even if they’re half-baked — if you have some sources to back you up, go for it. If you choose to just lurk and read, that’s OK too. If you are a robot and want to leave comments about male-enhancement pills, I would like to politely introduce you to my friend, Mr. Akismet.
Thanks, and Happy Posting.
